An Unashamed Workman
11-minute read
Introduction
Imagine a craftsman who has been chosen to create something for the king—a potter shaping a vessel, or a carpenter crafting a chair for the royal throne. He would not treat this task like any ordinary job. Knowing the work is for the king, he would give his utmost care, precision, and attention to detail, desiring to present a masterpiece worthy of royal approval.
In the same way, we as believers have been entrusted with the greatest assignment—to serve the King of Kings and uphold His Word. Every act of service, whether great or small, is ultimately for God Himself. The sermon “An Unashamed Workman” reminds us that we are to live and labor as servants who will one day present our work before God, desiring His approval and not His disappointment.
Drawing from 2 Timothy 2:15, the message teaches that we must be diligent to present ourselves approved to God, workers who need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Our competence does not come from human talent or intellect, but from the Holy Spirit who dwells in those born again through the gospel of the water and the Spirit.
Rightly Handle the Word of Truth
The first mark of an unashamed worker is to rightly handle the Word of Truth. This “Word of Truth” is none other than the gospel of salvation—the gospel of the water and the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). It is the message that Jesus took upon Himself all our sins through His baptism in the Jordan River, shed His blood on the Cross, and rose again to give us eternal life.
To rightly divide the Word means to handle Scripture accurately, discerning truth from error, and understanding the distinction between the Old and New Covenants. The Word of God is absolute, unchanging, and cannot be altered to fit human culture or opinions. Today’s world promotes compromise and relativity, but God’s truth remains the same—yesterday, today, and forever.
A diligent worker studies the Word deeply, treasures it, and lives by it. Through this, we preserve the purity of the gospel and become equipped to refute false teachings, teach others, and serve effectively in advancing God’s kingdom. A careless or complacent believer, however, will find himself ashamed when standing before the King.
Carefully Handle the Word of Truth
A true workman must not only be accurate but also careful in how he handles the Word. This means carrying out God’s work with humility, purity, and love. Paul instructed Timothy to avoid quarrels and foolish disputes that bring no profit but ruin those who hear them. The gospel must be shared with gentleness and patience, for even repentance itself is granted only by God’s mercy.
We must live as vessels of honor—cleansed, sanctified, and useful for the Master’s work. That means fleeing youthful lusts, avoiding worldly distractions, and pursuing righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Our conduct must reflect the purity of the Word we proclaim. When we share the gospel of the water and the Spirit, we must do so with kindness and compassion, not pride or argument, so that those bound by deception may come to the knowledge of truth.
Conclusion
Every believer is a workman in God’s kingdom, entrusted with the sacred task of upholding His truth. To be an unashamed workman is to study diligently, speak truthfully, live righteously, and serve humbly under the power of the Holy Spirit.
One day, our work will be laid before the King for inspection. May we stand approved—not ashamed—because we have rightly and carefully handled the Word of Truth, faithfully preserving and proclaiming the gospel of the water and the Spirit to a world in need of salvation.
