Humility is easy to display when we do not know much. We may be eager to learn, willing to listen and quick to recognise that there is still much for us to grow in. But the true test of humility comes when we have gained knowledge, experience, influence and even respect from others. Can we still maintain that same lowliness of mind when we know more?

There is a kind of humility that God sees in our lives. It is not simply about appearing humble before people, because there is also a false humility that can look humble on the outside while actually being driven by pride. Colossians 2:18 warns us about “false humility,” showing us the importance of discerning the humility that God is looking for in us. This humility is produced by the Spirit of Christ and is part of the transformation that takes place through the Gospel of water and the Spirit.

The Gospel of water and Spirit leads us into this true humility because it reveals our condition apart from God and takes away our self-righteousness. Through Jesus Christ’s baptism, death and resurrection, we see God’s complete work of salvation and realise that our righteousness does not come from ourselves, but from Christ. As we receive this Gospel and the Spirit of Christ within us, our lives also begin to change. We develop a servant heart like Jesus and learn that greatness is not found in power or status, but in serving others with humility.
